Choosing Your Dining Plan

Don’t get caught in the maze of available dining options. Solving the "which meal plan" dilemma is not so hard. If you take a few minutes to read the information provided in these pages, you can settle on a plan relatively easily, and over the course of the year you can make sure it keeps working for you.

Overestimating, Underestimating -- Not a problem

Many people tend to either over- or under-estimate the amount of money they spend for food. But that doesn’t have to be a problem at all! Remember, in October you can compare your Dining Points balance against the Dining Plan Use Chart to see how well you estimated your dining needs.

  • If you have too many Dining Points, you have until October 31st to reduce your Meal Plan.
  • If you don’t have enough Dining Points, you can add up to $1,500 (in increments of $25) in additional Dining Points per semester. Additions will be charged to your bursar’s account.

What Happens to Extra Points?

December -- Leftover Points Roll Over For Use In Spring:

  • Points remaining at the end of Fall Semester remain in the account for use during Spring Semester.
  • Spring Semester accounts must be purchased in full, regardless of Points left from Fall semester.

May -- End of Year Refunds

  • At the end of each academic year, for each semester of participation in the Dining Plan, 100% of each student's first 50 unspent Dining Plan Points plus 50% of the unspent amount above 50 is refunded. Thus, a student who participates in the Dining Plan for both semesters of the academic year will receive a $100 refund for the first 100 unspent Points plus a 50% refund of the Points remaining after the first 100.

Three ways to choose a meal plan:

  1. Based on your current Meal Plan – a.k.a. the Goldilocks method: is your Meal Plan this year too big, too small, or just right?
  2. Read the Dining Plan Student Profiles to see if you see yourself in any of the descriptions.
  3. Fill in the Dining Plan Worksheet to estimate the amount of money you will spend per semester. Sit down, consider your eating habits, fill in the blanks, and your answer will materialize at the bottom of the page.
