First Year Dining at Duke - How it Works

The First Year Dining Plan is designed to provide first year students with a unique dining experience. As part of the all-first-year East Campus, the First Year Dining Plan provides students with twelve meals weekly at The Marketplace, where they can build relationships with their dormmates and other first year students. The First Year Dining Plan is central to the community-building strategy of East campus’ all-first-year students residential experience.

For first year students we offer a program combining a Boardplan and Dining Points:

The Board Plan

Board Plan meals are served in The Marketplace at East Union , a facility designed to be one of the highlights of the first-year residential experience. The First Year Plan includes 12 meals per week, at which students dine with their classmates on East Campus. The 12 meals are divided into two pools and are represented by 12 clicks on the DukeCard.

Breakfast/Lunch Pool - 5 Meals

Breakfast: 7:30am – 11am (Monday through Friday)
Lunch: 12pm-2:30pm (Monday through Friday)

Students are allotted one breakfast click daily Monday through Friday. They may use this daily click to attend the all-you-care-to-eat breakfast at the Marketplace or they may use this click for a lunch equivalency. This lunch equivalency will apply $6.00 towards an a la carte lunch purchase in the Marketplace on the day of the missed breakfast. Only one breakfast/lunch click may be used per day.

Dinner/Brunch Pool - 7 Meals

Dinner: 5pm-9pm (Monday through Sunday)
Brunch: 10am-2pm (Saturday and Sunday)

Students may use their 7 dinner/brunch meal clicks at any of the 9 dinner/brunch meals offered at the Marketplace. These clicks are only valid for one week. Students may elect to attend the other 2 meals and use food points.

Students desiring a change of pace or a Kosher option may have dinner Monday through Thursday at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life.

Missed Meals —

We know you may skip a few meals every once in a while. In fact, realizing that the average student skips as many as three meals a week, we have been able to hold down the cost of the First Year Plan. You are invited to eat up to 12 meals a week at The Marketplace, and any time you eat more than nine meals a week, you’re actually getting more than you paid for. It’s on us! So don't feel guilty about missing a meal every now and then.

Dining Plan Points (Food Points)

The Dining Points Account is designed to give you flexibility in buying meals other than those provided by the First Year Plan. You spend these Points as you go, at any eatery on campus. Points can also be spent for pizza and sub Merchants on Points delivery and at the campus grocery stores. Simply hand your DukeCard to the cashier and your Account will have the Points value of the food deducted.

The Dining Points Account for first year students comes in three sizes to suit your needs, depending on your personal eating habits. The only difference between plans G, H and I is the amount available to spend. In choosing a Plan, you might want to think about how often you eat, what you like to eat, and if you are planning on spending any holiday breaks on campus. Additional Dining Points can be added to your account at any time.

The Not-So-Little Extras

Festive Dinners

When The Marketplace hosts Festive Dinners and Theme Nights at least twice a month, be prepared to enjoy an evening of culinary delights. And look forward to special programming and entertainment. These special events include Steak Night, Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year Brunch, Shrimp Appeal Jazz Lunch, Strawberry Shortcake Festival, Chocolate Truffle Class and Free Dessert Lunch.

Breakfast-On-The-Run

You may be in a hurry to get to that first class or finish off the paper that’s due today, and you just don’t have time for the sit-down breakfast. Just tell the cashier you want a Breakfast-On-The-Run, and you will receive a to-go food container and beverage cup to fill up and run with. No worries and no hassle. Just a quick and easy breakfast. Who said finding time to eat breakfast was impossible.

When You're Sick

If you're feeling too sick to make it to dinner, stay in bed and send a friend to The Marketplace with your DukeCard. You may either call ahead and pre-order your meal with one of our managers (call 660-3962; please give us at least 90 minutes notice) and have a friend take your card to The Marketplace and pick up your meal. Or instead of pre-ordering, you may ask your friend to fill a to-go box and beverage container for you. The person with your card simply needs to tell the cashier that he or she is picking up a sick-meal for you and if we haven’t already spoken with you, we’ll call your dorm room to confirm this information. If it’s not possible for you to send someone to pick up your meal, please call The Marketplace and we’ll arrange to send someone to your dorm with your meal.

Guest Meals

If you're going to have a friend, sibling, or parent visiting you at Duke, bring them to dinner on us! We've included four complimentary guest meals per semester in your First Year Plan, so your visitors can eat with you at The Marketplace. Guest passes are good only at The Marketplace. Due to limited space, guest passes are not accepted during Festive Dinners. Your parents will even get a chance to experience The Marketplace on move-in day in August with complimentary snacks and drinks.
